Parchment + Quottly: How We are Turning Credentials Into Opportunities, Together
Learn how Middle Tennesse State University collaborated on a digital badging initiative that scales through the power of Parchment’s platform.
We started talking about badges a couple of years ago. We had various departments interested in micro-credentials and alternative credentials. As Registrar, I was completely on board with the idea, it was simply a matter of how we were going to execute it.
It was a matter of making sure we had a consistent approach and doing it collaboratively. I brought everyone in the room that was interested in badging to discuss our goals and needs. I wanted it organized so that we’re not all taking different approaches. If we were going to do this, we wanted to do this as a university and we wanted to do it right.
We also did a fair amount of research. Luckily, AACRAO has a great best practices report on alternative credentials. After some planning, we went to the Provost with our strategy and he approved it.
It’s been great. Once we got into implementation and could see it first-hand, we saw how easy it was. The issuing and awarding of badges is ridiculously easy. Like I said before, we have a trusted relationship with Parchment so we know what we are getting. We have been really pleased.
We did our due diligence and looked at all the major players in badging. I knew what I was getting with Parchment because we have partnered for several years with our transcripts. All the platforms offered similar features, but Parchment stood out due to its simplicity and cost-effectiveness. The fee structure offered by Parchment for badging was straightforward, allowing the university to create and award badges to as many students as needed without the need for additional licenses. This simplicity and flexibility that Parchment offered in awarding badges aligned with the university’s goals and made Parchment the easy choice for us. The existing relationship with Parchment for other services added to the familiarity and trust in the company for both ourselves and for our students.
Initial feedback and data indicate positive student engagement and utilization of the badges. Students have been downloading and sharing their badges on social media platforms like LinkedIn, showcasing their achievements and enhancing their professional profiles. To see it clearly through the analytical tools is awesome. I’ve gone on LinkedIn and seen their posts and the passion they have for their MTSU accomplishments. It’s cool to see.
We plan to expand the badging program further, with 13 new badge proposals already in progress. The badges span various departments and programs, including career development, marketing, and integrated studies. We are exploring a comprehensive learning record for students, supplementing their transcript and diploma. Every time I meet with people across campus, there is interest in expansion. I wouldn’t be surprised if we quadrupled the amount of badges we are issuing in a very short amount of time.
