Matthew Pittinsky, Ph.D. is the CEO of Parchment and co-founder and former CEO and Executive Chairman of Blackboard Inc. He currently serves on the Boards of American University, New Classrooms, and Parchment, and previously served on the Boards of Blackboard, CampusLogic, High Meadows Graduate School of Teaching and Learning, The Institute for Citizens & Scholars, and Picmonic.
Between Blackboard and Parchment, Matthew earned his Ph.D. and in 2009 joined the sociology faculty at Arizona State University (ASU) as a tenure-track assistant professor, where he specialized in economic sociology, sociology of education and social network analysis. He taught undergraduate classes in Research Methods and Sociology of Education. Matthew remains a non tenure-track visiting scholar of sociology at ASU.
In 2012 the Teachers College at Columbia University awarded Matthew with The President’s Medal of Excellence to recognize his impact and innovation in the field of education technology and entrepreneurship. In 2000 he was named a Kilby Laureate. Matthew is a frequent speaker and writer on topics related to education technology and entrepreneurship. He is the editor of The Wired Tower (Prentice-Hall Financial Times).
Matthew holds a B.S. in Political Science from American University, Ed.M. in Education Policy from Harvard University Graduate School of Education and a Ph.D. in Sociology of Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.
